New Batmobile and Batwing LEGO sets officially revealed

The LEGO Group is going all-in on Batman with the reveal of three new sets, 76224 Batmobile: Batman vs The Joker Chase, 76265 Batwing: Batman vs The Joker, and 76264 Batmobile Pusuit: Batman vs The Joker.

With the appearance of these three sets on lego.com, where you can pre-order the larger Batmobile, it seems that the set based on The Flash is officially dead. Rising from the ashes of LEGO DC Super Heroes, LEGO Batman lives on with a 4+ set and two minifigure-scale sets, the first since The Batman sets in 2021 (not counting the 4+ set with Harley Quinn).

Every one of these sets features the Batman and The Joker as their only minifigures. Weirdly enough, all of the sets have the phrase ‘Batman vs The Joker’ in their set names, too. Batman is the same in the minifigure-scale sets with a slight variation in the 4+ set, but the Joker is slightly different in each one. It’s a little disheartening to see no other character included, as well as the repetitive nature of the sets themselves, but they look well-designed nonetheless.

Although there isn’t specific branding to tie this set in with Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, it certainly appears to be based on that version of the Batmobile. Batman and Joker’s appearances also look to be inspired by that film, though they aren’t perfect replicas. As mentioned before, this set was likely meant to be a The Flash movie set, and was changed to a more generic Batman branding. Regardless, the car itself looks accurate to the ‘source material’ and is a smooth and intricate design.

76265 Batwing: Batman vs The Joker

Price: £31.99 / $37.99 / €37.99 Pieces: 357 Release date: August 1, 2023

Like the previous set, this one seems to be an indirect tie-in to Tim Burton’s Batman. The Joker minifigure here is the same as the one in the Batmobile, but he has a hat instead of hair. The Batwing itself looks similar to the one in 76120 Batman Batwing and the Riddler Heist – a set that notably featured Batman and one of his villains, but also included Gordon and Shazam as a bonus. Just saying.

The Batwing has a storage compartment and can fire studs. Like its much larger counterpart, 761611989 Batwing, this Batwing can also be hung on a wall to display. You can hang them next to each other for an excellent ‘don’t talk to me or my son ever again’ effect.

76264 Batmobile Pursuit: Batman vs The Joker

Price: £20.99 / $26.99 / €26.99 Pieces: 54 Release date: August 1, 2023

This 4+ Batmobile is cute but certainly looks a little small for the price. Strangely enough, the Joker minifigure in this set is completely different from the one in the other two sets aside from the face print. Interestingly, this set has a regular generic Batman logo at the top, while the other two sets have a 1989 Batman movie logo (despite not technically being tie-ins to that movie).

Overall, a strange wave of LEGO Batman sets. It’s not clear why they all have almost the same name and only feature the same two characters, but it’s not too great of a sign for LEGO DC fans.
