Peugeot shares first images of LEGO Technic 9X8 Hypercar

Peugeot has published the first images of a new LEGO Technic version of its 9X8 Hypercar, which is presumably racing on to store shelves later this year.

Designed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans Hypercar category in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the hybrid racer combines a 680hp twin-turbo 2.6L V6 engine with a 272hp electric motor. How much of that will be reflected in the internals of the LEGO set remains to be seen, but images shared in Peugeot’s official press centre today at least give us a solid look at the exterior of the Technic model.

Built predominantly in dark grey and black with striking lime green highlights, the LEGO Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar looks to fall into roughly the same size and scale as 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF Corse #51, so we’re probably looking at around £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99. We’ll have to wait for the LEGO Group to properly unveil this curvaceous car to know for sure, along with details like its piece count and release date.

If Peugeot has already published official lifestyle images of the set, though, a full reveal probably isn’t too far away now. And if that’s the case, it’s probably reasonable to expect it to launch on or around May 1. Like other Technic race cars before it, the 9X8 – so-called as a tribute to the iconic 908, with the X apparently a nod to its hybridisation – has its fair share of stickers. But it also has another ace up its sleeve.

In one of the images available so far, we can see that the car includes glow-in-the-dark 4L bars across its front grille, which cast a luminous green light in dark surroundings. That opens up all kinds of possibilities for the LEGO Star Wars theme…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
