Early review says LEGO Mario Kart would be perfect for minifigures

An early review of all six major LEGO Mario Kart sets has surfaced, arguing that the range would have been perfect for the debut of minifigures.

With just over a week remaining until the long-awaited launch of LEGO Mario Kart, the first review of the full range has surfaced online. It offers a closer look at the sets’ functionality, models, and more. Firebird Extra has taken a closer look at six of the seven LEGO Mario Kart sets.

From 72031 Yoshi Bike to 72036 Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set, the review reveals a surprising amount of accuracy compared to the games via the action tags. The latest update to the LEGO Super Mario app adds everything from the item boxes to the recognition of the individual vehicles and even the item boxes offer a randomised item to use in the race – using them is left to your imagination though.

Aside from looking closely at the new figures and karts, the review concludes by stating that a Mario Kart range within LEGO Super Mario would have been the ideal place to debut Mario minifigures similar to LEGO Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda.

That’s not the case in the six upcoming sets, though. They have been designed to be compatible with (but not reliant on) the electronic Mario, Luigi, and Peach figures. This means that action tags can be used to enhance the sets’ functionality with the app though and it is noted that the Mario Kart wave is much more cohesive than other LEGO Super Mario set waves.

While we continue to wait for the debut of LEGO Super Mario minifigures (which has not been rumoured or confirmed at the time of writing), the latest rumours for the theme next year posit that two more electronic figure starter sets will debut. With these rumours and the Mario Kart models, minifigures based on this franchise still don’t appear to be on the cards.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

People asking for Mario minifigures are piddling in the wind since Jakks Toys holds the sole rights to Mario action figures with “construction features” so unless Nintendo renegotiates that licence, it’s not happening.
