Second LEGO Classic Castle set rumoured for 90th anniversary in 2022

A second LEGO Castle set may be in the works to celebrate the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary, this time based on the classic Forestmen subtheme.

We know at least one celebratory set based on either Castle, Space, Pirates or BIONICLE is on the way as a result of last year’s LEGO Ideas poll, but new reports suggest we could actually be getting multiple products from across those themes. Rumours have been swirling for a while that the flagship 90th anniversary set will be 10305 Lion King’s Castle, which is thought to be a remake of 1984’s 6080 King’s Castle.

While that set has been linked to an eye-watering price tag of $349.99, a second rumoured 90th anniversary set, product number 10497, is said to offer a cheaper way to celebrate. Current speculation is that the Creator Expert set will be a remake of the 1979 Classic Space model 497 Galaxy Explorer, based on its product number being so far removed from the current sequencing (we’re only up to 10311 Orchid at this point, remember).

LEGO fan website Wooden Duck has now hinted at a potential third 90th anniversary set for 2022, again based on a Classic Castle subtheme. In a recent post, the Chinese outlet teased the mysterious model with a catalogue spread of Forestmen sets, implying it’ll take inspiration from the late ‘80s run of castles, fortresses and hideouts built around vast trees.

There’s very little else to go on at the moment, but the sets pictured in the catalogue spread include (deep breath): 6017 King’s Oarsmen, 6035 Castle Guard, 6039 Twin-Arm Launcher, 6049 Viking Voyager, 6054 Forestmen’s Hideout, 6062 Battering Ram, 6066 Camouflaged Outpost, 6074 Black Falcon’s Fortress and 6103 Castle Mini Figures.

Not all of those are explicitly tied to Castle’s green-robed knights, of course, but enough of them are – combined with the masses of Forestmen minifigures in the main image – to plant this particular rumour flag firmly in Forestmen territory. Whether we’re looking at another updated version of a certain classic set, in the same way 10305 Lion King’s Castle is expected to be a direct update of 6080 King’s Castle, remains to be seen.

And remember, this is strictly just a rumour at this stage – there’s nothing to say we’re getting any of these 90th anniversary sets in this form. All we know for certain at the minute is that at least one is definitely on the way, and it’s most likely to arrive in around three months, given the LEGO Group was originally established on August 10, 1932.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
