Soundwave superior! LEGO Transformers fans react one week on
LEGO Icons 10358 Soundwave has been officially unveiled for almost a week, giving Transformers plenty of time to fall head over heels for it.
10358 Soundwave is set to make its debut on August 1, a 1,505-piece Transformers set that can be displayed either in humanoid robot form or in its alternate form as a cassette player. As the very first LEGO Decepticon and a fan favourite to boot, it’s no surprise that it’s been going down a treat with fans.
Many agree that 10358 Soundwave is the best of the lot so far, even beating out 10302 Optimus Prime and far exceeding the controversial 10338 Bumblebee. As well as his impressive design, there’s a lot of excitement about the execution of the sound brick, which perfectly captures the iconic voice.
Of course, with a price tag of £159.99 / $189.99 / €179.99, there are inevitably comments about the cost. That said, there is a lot packed into this model, with brick-built side models for Ravage and Laserbeak, as well as a tiny version of Soundwave in cassette player form. In terms of display possibilities and interactive features, you do get a lot.
Indeed, it’s all those extra bits and pieces that helped to make Soundwave so popular as a character back in the ’80s, as pointed out by aptly named redditor nerdshowandtell, who wrote: “For me as a kid his official toy was so much fun because not only did you get him, but you could get all the cassette transformers to go with him. Plus he had the best damn voice in the cartoon, after Prime of course.”
Often, anticipation leaves people feeling underwhelmed. With only one LEGO Transformers coming out per year in the last couple of years, the LEGO Group needs to knock it out of the park so as not to disappoint – and thankfully the designers appear to have nailed it.
“I was hoping they’d do a Soundwave as soon as I first heard about the Optimus reveal,” said one long-time fan on reddit. “But it looks SO much better than what I was expecting.”
The designers of 10358 Soundwave appear to have truly gone above and beyond with this set, as noted in our hands-on review. That’s not gone unnoticed by fans either, with tomh_1138 writing on reddit: “Soundwave was my favourite Transformer growing up in the ’80s. This is perfect. The care and attention here brings me so much joy. I will absolutely be purchasing this set.”
Despite the hefty price tag, there are fewer complaints about it than typically seen on sets in this price bracket, suggesting that people are finding more value in the LEGO Icons set – and rightly so.
If you’ve also been convinced by what you’ve seen so far, you’ll be able to buy 10358 Soundwave from August 1, retailing for £159.99 in the UK, $189.99 in the US, and €179.99 in Europe.
