Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will feature five distinct lightsaber stances

More details are emerging about exactly how gameplay will work with Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

As the release date for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor approaches, director Stig Asmussen has revealed to Game Informer that players will discover ‘five fully-realised stances in the game’ for protagonist Cal to play through. This includes a dedicated dual-blade option and a crossguard-style lightsaber, reminiscent of Kylo Ren’s in the sequel trilogy.

Different stances will work better against different enemies, meaning the player will need to think on the fly to work out which style of lightsaber fighting to use against any given enemy. Cal will be able to fight with a blaster, a lightsaber, two lightsabers, and even a blaster at the same time as a lightsaber at different points in the game.

“It really speaks to where we find Cal in this part of the story,” Asmussen explained, going on to describe Cal as an ‘unconventional Jedi’.

“It’s five years since the first game, and the dark times are still in full swing… he has to do unconventional things,” the director continued. “So, something that would be frowned upon during the height of the Jedi Order? Cal’s finding he’s going to do whatever it takes.”

Asmussen also shared more about the new travelling techniques that the player (as Cal) can use to make his way through the galaxy, such as an ascension cable and the ability to ‘tame and ride’ mounts.

“It’s much of a wider Metroidvania approach,” Asmussen explained in the interview. “Cal can cross huge gaps by chaining several types of skills together. But it’s also about how we approach these mounts and how they’re used to negotiate and dominate the world.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will arrive March 17, 2023, on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and PC platforms.
