Newly-announced Star Wars movies may not hit theatres until late 2025

Recent news of three new Star Wars movies has fans excited, but they’ll have to be patient as the films are apparently still a way off.

There hasn’t been a new Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, but in that time there have been several announcements. Filmmakers such as Patty Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Chloé Zhao, Shawn Levy, Rian Johnson, and more have all been announced as directors of new Star Wars films – and there has been no follow-through on any of them, with several being outright cancelled.

While this has been going on, Star Wars has made a successful pivot to streaming, with high profile Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi proving the popular franchise still has staying power.

At this year’s Star Wars Celebration, even more films have been announced – but Lucasfilm insists this time, it’s for real. Disney’s release calendar has a spot for a Star Wars film in December of 2025, and sources close to The Hollywood Reporter have suggested that this slot will be for the Rey-focused movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Then, in 2026, Lucasfilm hopes to cash in on the past few years of streaming series with Dave Filoni’s ‘MandoVerse’ crossover movie.

In an interview with IGN, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated that Filoni’s streaming series culmination film will be the result of ‘six [or] seven years’ of build-up. If that’s counting from The Mandalorian Season 1 in 2019, a 2026 release date tracks.

Either way, this means Star Wars fans are going to have to wait a while until the franchise makes its grand return to theatres everywhere. And for LEGO fans, it means we’ll have to wait a while for sets based on these new films. In the meantime, though, there are still a lot of LEGO Star Wars spaceships to be had.
