Star Wars: Starfighter is the movie LEGO Star Wars needs
The announcement of Star Wars: Starfighter is exactly what LEGO Star Wars needs after similar-sounding projects have disappeared.
One of the biggest announcements to come from Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025 is the news of a new Star Wars movie from Shawn Levy coming on May 31, 2027. The film will star Ryan Gosling and be named Star Wars: Starfighter.
With a name like that, we can only assume that it will include numerous starfighters and pilots, similar to both the cancelled Rangers of the New Republic series and the Rogue Squadron movie, which is facing issues in its development. With the fate of the latter seemingly up in the air, it leaves the LEGO Group with two fewer starfighter and pilot-centric projects to cover in LEGO Star Wars.

This is where 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter can help to fill the gap, hopefully offering some new sequel trilogy starfighter designs that would be perfect for LEGO Star Wars sets. This is only speculation based on the title of the film, but at least one new starfighter seems all but certain.
Starfighters have always been a huge part of LEGO Star Wars, ranging from more creative designs inspired by Star Wars: Resistance and The Mandalorian to familiar models made time and time again, such as the TIE and Jedi interceptors.

By placing Star Wars: Starfighter five years after the end of the sequel trilogy, it somewhat limits the chances of the more familiar ships, including TIE Fighters and X-wings, from appearing as a new era dawns.
We’ll have to see precisely what comes from Star Wars: Starfighter in the lead-up to May 2027, but by the sounds of it, this film will be an ideal opportunity for the LEGO Star Wars designers to explore starfighters, including in ways the galaxy is unfamiliar with.
