LEGO Super Mario 71411 The Mighty Bowser concepts reveal a robot

LEGO Super Mario’s massive 71411 The Mighty Bowser started as a robot; concept art shown for MAR10 Day has revealed.

March 10, 2023, is MAR10 day and a time to celebrate all things Super Mario. The LEGO Group’s 2023 reveals for the event included a new set and a tease for Donkey Kong. However, in the middle of those announcements in their YouTube event was a showcase of some concepts for 71411 The Mighty Bowser

The huge LEGO set is available now and has been for some time, though it started as a robot as revealed by senior designer Carl Merriam. The build, named Percy, inspired the idea in 2020 that eventually became 71411 The Mighty Bowser

A variety of concept art for the base and the Bowser figure was also revealed, including one where the two were combined so that Bowser could not be removed from the base.

Motors in the platform were also considered but proved to be too difficult to integrate while keeping the organic appearance of the villain. However, puppeteering techniques worked a lot better and were chosen as the main feature of 71411 The Mighty Bowser

The platform was also intended to transform at one point with parts of the model folding outwards, though the final build is more static with towers that can be removed instead. This is explained as allowing Bowser to be the centre of attention in the LEGO Super Mario set.
