Will LEGO lean towards Marvel’s What If…? down the line?

Almost half of the minifigures in 71031 Marvel Studios are from the upcoming animated series What If…?, but does that suggest a future path for the LEGO Group?

The full line-up of minifigures in 71031 Marvel Studios includes:

The Scarlet Witch
The Vision
Monica Rambeau
Captain America
Winter Soldier
Loki
Sylvie
Captain Carter
T’Challa Star-Lord
Zombie Captain America
Zombie Hunter Spidey
Gamora with the Blade of Thanos

The last five of those are all characters we can expect to get to know better in What If…? Three of the rest of the minifigures are from WandaVision, with two each from Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

That’s a fairly even split from the other three TV shows. Of course, by the time 71031 Marvel Studios launches on September 1 almost worldwide, with later releases in some locations, most Marvel fans will be at least somewhat acquainted with the animated characters.

Perhaps the LEGO Group are simply catering to what will be the most current Marvel TV show at the time of release, or perhaps they’re hinting at a future lean towards more What If…? content for incoming sets.

Of course, we’ve already got two sets specifically dedicated to the show but if What If…? lives up to its hype, we reckon there’ll be plenty more fodder for even more builds and unique minifigures.

Until that day comes, 71031 Marvel Studios will be available at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores, and across all the usual retailers on September 1 for $4.99 £3.49 / €3.99 in most locations worldwide.
