In a fascinating talk through of a scene from The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Director Mike Mitchell reveals the secrets of putting the film together.
With The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part in cinemas now, Director Mike Mitchell has spoken to the New York Times about bringing the animation to life. Narrating a scene from early on in the film, he reveals some of the behind-the-scenes work that went into the animation.
The snippet chosen is when Emmet, Lucy and Ultrakatty first encounter General Mayhem’s Formidaball.
“Undeniably, Apocalypseburg is a nod to Mad Max without stealing from Mad Max. It was really fun to do all these Apocalyptic vehicles and this dusty look but all through the whimsical lens of LEGO,” he says. It might not much of a surprise to fans, but it is interesting to hear the filmmakers name check some of the feature’s influences.
Mitchell also reveals where the adorable voices of Mayhem’s missiles comes from. “The stars and hearts are voiced by the children of our editors, Wyatt Jones and Claire Knight.”
