The success of Avatar: the Way of Water guarantees more sequels

With Avatar: The Way of Water now profitable, its success at the box office will pave the way for more sequels in the years to come.

Whilst some may have doubted that James Cameron’s return to Pandora after more than decade might not be as financially-successful as his original film, the phenomenal success of Avatar: The Way of Water should by now have silenced any naysayers.

The sequel has already passed the $1.5 billion mark at the box office, a number that even surprised Cameron himself. The visionary director had previously mentioned that his latest movie needed to become, “…the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.” With Avatar: The Way of Water only just entering its fourth week on big screens around the world, its financial success is certainly assured and also opens the door to more sequels.

“I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3,’ which is already in the can,” said Cameron in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written. We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”

Another recent interview with Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 will introduce the ‘Ash People,’ a never-before-seen Na’vi tribe and producer Jon Landau also hinted that the fifth film could even include a return to Earth.

Five new LEGO Avatar: The Way of Water sets launched on January 1, 2023 in the shape of 75575 Ilu Discovery, 75576 Skimwing Adventure, 75577 Mako Submarine, 75578 Metkayina Reef Home and 75579 Payakan the Tulkun & Crabsuit.
