Our chances of a new LEGO Star Wars Captain Rex minifigure in 2023 just went way up

The arrival of two new LEGO Star Wars helmets has greatly increased our chances of getting a brand new Captain Rex minifigure in 2023.

75349 Captain Rex Helmet and 75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet will both land on LEGO Store shelves on March 1, becoming the first prequel-era characters to join this subtheme. But that’s not the only reason they stand out: in fact, 75349 Captain Rex Helmet will be the first set in the range not to have an accompanying minifigure available on shelves at the same time.

When 75274 TIE Fighter Pilot Helmet, 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet and 75277 Boba Fett Helmet debuted in 2020, LEGO minifigures of all those characters were available in sets at the same time. So while the helmets themselves didn’t include minifigures, you could pick them up pretty easily in the current assortment, through models like 75237 TIE Fighter Attack and 75243 Slave I – 20th Anniversary Edition.

The same was true for 75304 Darth Vader Helmet and 75305 Scout Trooper Helmet in 2021, and again for 75327 Luke Skywalker (Red Five) Helmet, 75328 The Mandalorian Helmet and 75343 Dark Trooper Helmet in 2022. And while we haven’t had a Phase I minifigure of Commander Cody since 2011’s 7959 Geonosian Starfighter, the character is currently available in his Phase II gear in 75337 AT-TE Walker.

That leaves Captain Rex as the exception to the rule, because the 501st leader isn’t available in any form at the moment. He was last seen in 2016’s 75157 Captain Rex’s AT-TE, while the only variant of the Clone Trooper in Phase II armour arrived all the way back in 2013, in 75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar.

We’re long overdue a new LEGO Star Wars Captain Rex minifigure, then – especially as the LEGO Group has been busy bulking out our wider 501st collections in 75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers and this year’s 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack. The latter set, which launched on January 1, includes a 501st Officer – but the troops still need a captain.

The presence of 75349 Captain Rex Helmet by no means guarantees we’ll see a new Captain Rex minifigure in 2023, but the odds have surely just gone up a little bit…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then. You can follow me on Twitter at @brfa_chris.
