If the MCU reboots, what would that mean for LEGO Marvel?

Rumours are flying that the MCU is heading for a soft reboot, so what does that mean for the world of LEGO Marvel that’s grown alongside the films?

Speaking on The Watch podcast, author of the new Marvel book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Joanna Robinson revealed that she has a quote from Kevin Feige “sort of implying that…Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything”.

“That’s not to use a Loki-ism,” she continued. “[They’ll] prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever.”

Secret Wars is due to come out in May, 2027, so we’re a few years off from it happening – if it even does. After all, CCO of Marvel Entertainment and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige recently stated in an interview with Variety that “it feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface”, suggesting he at least feels like there are plenty more stories to tell.

Over in the world of LEGO Marvel, it’s a similar story. The LEGO Group has continued to think of new and creative ways to capture iconic moments of the Infinity Saga, despite it officially coming to a close in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. Four years on, 76266 Endgame Final Battle has only just come out, capturing the climactic final battle in a uniquely epic style.

While new sets come out alongside new movies (see notable favourites like 7632 The Hoopty for The Marvels, the soon-to-retire 76208 The Goat Boat for Thor: Love and Thunder, and 76254 Baby Rocket’s Ship for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3), LEGO Marvel has consistently chosen to revisit popular moments from earlier films as well. As with anything, inspiration around that golden era of the MCU would surely eventually run out, so perhaps a reboot of the MCU would be just as good for the accompanying LEGO theme as it would be for the cinematic franchise.

Going back to the rumoured quote, Robinson suggested that the MCU would keep ‘what was working’ but also even bring back ‘people you thought were gone forever’. The first names that spring to mind are surely Tony Stark and Natasha Romanov, but it could also expand to include villains that fans wanted to see for longer and who could benefit from more LEGO sets.

Take Ultron, for example. He’s arguably one of the most popular MCU villains but only featured in one film. He’s already returned once in What If…?, so it’s clear the MCU doesn’t want to say goodbye to him yet. As a LEGO figure, Ultron has appeared in a few smaller sets, such as 76032 The Avengers Quinjet City Chase, but it would also be exciting to see the evil android in. some of the true-to-life models, like a LEGO Marvel Helmet of his face, or a set that depicts his unique armour in more detail, like 76250 Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws.

All in all, an MCU reboot would surely only do good things for its LEGO counterparts. The more varied inspiration the LEGO designers have, the better the sets they make. That’s why so many of the most popular themes (LEGO Star Wars, NINJAGO, Marvel, and Harry Potter) are based on franchises with deep lore, with plenty of scenes, characters, and moments for the LEGO Group to recreate. If the reboot does come to pass, it could be the start of an exciting new chapter for both cinematic and brick-built fans of the Marvel universe.
