The LEGO Group and Epic Games announce a partnership

The LEGO Group and Epic Games are entering a long-term partnership aiming to make the metaverse safe for children and families.

Epic Games, who are behind the Unreal Engine and a game that you may be familiar with – Fortnite – are working with the LEGO Group in a new partnership that aims to shape the metaverse and make it safer and fun for children.

“Kids enjoy playing in physical and digital worlds and move seamlessly between the two,” shared Niels B Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group. “We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication in both.

“We have a responsibility to make digital play safe, inspiring and beneficial for all, and just as we’ve protected children’s rights to safe physical play for generations, we are committed to doing the same for digital play. We look forward to working with Epic Games to shape this exciting and playful future.”

“The LEGO Group has captivated the imagination of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families,” commented Tim Sweeney, CEO & Founder of Epic Games.

This partnership has been confirmed to include plans for a new digital experience that will give children tools to create and empower them in a safe space. No details on when this experience will be available have been announced yet.

No other products that could come as part of this partnership have been confirmed in the announcement, including any mention of LEGO Fortnite sets. However, the LEGO Group and Epic Games are now in a long-term partnership, though it only affects the metaverse at the time of writing.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
