James Gunn and Peter Safran to lead the future of DC movies

James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new leaders of DC’s film, TV and animation efforts, including the future of the DCEU.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that filmmaker of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Guardians of the Galaxy Farm, James Gunn as well as Peter Safran of Aquaman, Shazam, and their sequels are the new co-CEOs of DC Studios. DC Studios is a new division of Warner Bros. that is replacing DC Films.

For comparison, it appears that these positions are similar to Kevin Feige’s role at Marvel Studios, but with two people instead of one.

James Gunn will be leading the creative side of DC Studios while Peter Safran is responsible for business and production, though both are reported as continuing to direct and produce projects. It’s also mentioned that throughout the rumoured four-year deal, James Gunn will be exclusive to DC, potentially limiting his involvement in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

James Gunn took to Twitter shortly after the report was shared to confirm its accuracy, not long after sharing the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special trailer

“We’re honoured to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” Gunn and Safran shared in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.

“Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equalled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”

This follows previous reports of multiple DC films in development for the DCEU and beyond, including a Man of Steel with Henry Cavill recently confirming his return as Superman.

With this new leadership, the DCEU may be able to have a more cohesive universe with further films that could potentially inspire LEGO sets as the cinematic universe has in the past.
