LEGO Technic 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar officially revealed

The LEGO Group has officially unveiled 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar, confirming the latest LEGO Technic set’s price, piece count and release date.

Initial images of the 1,775-piece model were shared by Peugeot slightly ahead of schedule on April 13, but the LEGO Group’s full press release confirms when the set will be available, and – most importantly – how much it will cost to get your hands on it. The dark grey, black and lime green racer launches May 1 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99.

That matches the price tag of 2021’s 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF CORSE #51, so you can expect 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar to display very nicely with that set. The hybrid racer – which in real life was designed to compete in the hypercar category of the 24 Hours of Le Mans championships – measures 13cm tall, 50cm long and 22cm wide, coming in at 1:10 scale.

“Our two brands have come together to create a product that celebrates a new era of hybrid racing and engineering,” said LEGO designer Kasper René Hansen. “Recreating the shapes and details of such an elegant car using LEGO Technic elements wasn’t an easy feat, but it’s been an honour to work so creatively with the Team Peugeot TotalEnergies on this one and I’m proud that together we have been able to build the hypercar for real in LEGO Technic form.”

It sounds like Technic fans will find plenty to enjoy in the guts of 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar, from an accurately-scaled seven-speed transmission and V6 engine to the 9X8’s suspension and hybrid powertrain system.

“Our technical cooperation with the LEGO Group started in January 2022, five months before the Peugeot 9X8 reveal,” added Peugeot Sport Technical Director Olivier Jansonnie. “It took one year to fully develop the project with the technical and design teams, allowing us to directly transpose the technical details of the Peugeot 9X8 to the LEGO Technic model.

“It was very important for both brands to create a model that is as realistic as possible. Peugeot, Peugeot Sport and the LEGO teams had numerous meetings about the development of the suspension and hybrid systems that cannot be replicated from photos. We thank the LEGO Group for this project, we are very proud and impressed by the final result that is more than we could have imagined.”

42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar includes 1,775 pieces and launches May 1 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
