LEGO Marvel 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet doubles up as… a pencil pot?

The LEGO Group’s lifestyle images for 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet demonstrate how the newly-revealed Marvel set can double up as, erm, a pencil pot.

If you’ve ever wanted to poke sharp objects into a superhero’s head, the LEGO Group has you covered with 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet. The 602-piece build – unveiled today, and launching on April 1 – seemingly takes advantage of the fact it’s less helmet, more mask to serve dual purpose as a pencil pot, as demonstrated by the set’s official images.

Okay, this is pretty weird, but we can think of a few explanations for what we’re looking at. First, maybe this is what the LEGO Group meant by DOTS’ concepts living on ‘across other areas of the business’? We’ve had plenty of pencil holders in that arts and crafts theme, including a Wizarding World version that’s due out in March, and this feels like a more detailed (and expensive) interpretation of that idea.

It’s also entirely possible that the LEGO Group’s lifestyle photographers just didn’t know what to do with 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet, in the same way that 75349 Captain Rex Helmet and 75350 Clone Commander Cody Helmet ended up strewn across stairs like gleaming white trip hazards. What’s the best way to show off a static, functionless display model that doesn’t have much to hide? Chuck some pens in it. Bosh.

Speaking of not much to hide: perhaps there’s also an element of being deliberately reserved with those official images, because you only really get a good look at 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet from one or two angles across the entire spread. There are no pictures of it from the back, for example, in the same way that the LEGO Star Wars helmets were shown off in 360 degrees.

It’s not exactly clear why, because 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet‘s 360-degree view (which will hopefully be available at LEGO.com) proves it still looks pretty good from the back. We’re not talking a half-finished or forgotten design here. But maybe Marvel, Disney or even the LEGO Marvel design team decreed it looks best from the front, and so to best flesh out the assortment of images we’ve ended up with a pencil pot.

Nobody really knows the logic behind making Star-Lord into a pencil holder except the people responsible, so it’s unlikely we’ll ever find out the real reason for these photos. But we’re not complaining, either – more unusual uses for LEGO sets please, TLG. Thanks.

LEGO Marvel 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet launches April 1 for £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99, and is available to pre-order now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
