LEGO Marvel 76269 Avengers Tower – before you buy

76269 Avengers Tower launches in less than 24 hours, so here’s everything you need to know before taking the plunge on this mammoth LEGO Marvel set…

This year’s LEGO Black Friday release is 76269 Avengers Tower, arguably the pinnacle of LEGO superhero sets – and one that LEGO Marvel fans have been clamouring for ever since the LEGO Group picked up the keys to the MCU in 2012. Coming in at a size and scale few could have guessed would be possible a decade ago, the 5,201-piece set soars above even 76178 Daily Bugle, and boasts a minifigure count that’s practically unparalleled.

But chances are you already know all this. What you really want to know is whether 76269 Avengers Tower is worth grabbing on day one, and whether the building experience can truly live up to the finished product we’ve seen on the box and in product images. To help you decide one way or the other, here are our key takeaways from the latest LEGO Marvel set, having spent many hours piecing the entire thing together for our review

It’s not as repetitive as you’d expect…

“Look on those windows, ye mighty, and despair!” We can’t actually speak for Ozymandias, but we’re pretty sure that’s what he would have said gazing up at 76269 Avengers Tower. Almost intimidating in size, this soaring skyscraper breaks the record for the most windows in a single LEGO set – a stat that sounds impressive, but also sounds like the foundations for a mind-numbingly repetitive build.

And yet, 76269 Avengers Tower is not really that repetitive at all. The designers have wisely carved up the build between interior and exterior, so you’re never stacking windows for too long before you get to piece together another slice of Marvel storytelling among the tower’s various rooms.

…but it’s also not very challenging

You can’t have everything, and for all that 76269 Avengers Tower does offer – 5,201 pieces, 32 characters, untold references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it doesn’t exactly present the most challenging build. That’s perhaps to be expected from a building that’s light on architectural detail (skyscrapers are foreign to the Modular Buildings Collection for a reason), but it means the price tag here doesn’t equate to complexity.

There’s joy to be found in simplicity, though. And that’s where 76269 Avengers Tower really shines, leaning into its straightforward approach to keep the focus on its characters and storytelling, remembering that this structure – just like in the source material – is all in service to what’s actually happening in your head, or on the page, or on screen. Grab your minifigures, set them up around the tower and tell us you’re not having fun.

You’ll never spot every single reference

Did we mention untold references? Good luck spotting and recognising every single nod, hat tip and background detail during the build: you’ll put this thing together yourself, apply every last sticker and place every last piece, and still you probably won’t catch them all the first time round. 76269 Avengers Tower is very clearly a LEGO Marvel set designed by hardcore fans of this universe, and it means the model will keep on giving long after you’ve popped on the final brick.

Not all LEGO sets benefit from continued appreciation and enjoyment just on display, but you’ll keep coming back to and poring over 76269 Avengers Tower for months, and perhaps years – not only to spot the references, but also to rearrange and pose all those minifigures…

The minifigures are a mixed bag

Speaking of minifigures: this is where 76269 Avengers Tower can’t quite deliver on the hype, focusing very much on quantity over quality. Where 76178 Daily Bugle struck a fine balance between the two, delivering the ultimate Spider-Man experience in the one box with fresh and updated characters alongside old favourites, 76269 Avengers Tower’s ultimate Avengers experience mostly equates to a bunch of minifigures we’ve seen before.

A handful of them are updated, but too few boast the level of detail we’ve come to expect at this price point – dual-moulded legs, printed arms, and so on – while the new characters make for relatively dull minifigures (Dr. Helen Cho, Erik Selvig et al). You get everyone you’d expect, bar a handful of exceptions, but aside from a couple of stand-outs – Vision and Hulk – none of these are set sellers on their own.

A smaller number of more detailed minifigures might have made Marvel fans even happier, but it’s hard to knock the totality of the line-up here, at least.

It brings out the best in the Daily Bugle

If you already own LEGO Marvel’s other skyscraper and are concerned about how two such towering models might look together on display, these images will hopefully quell your fears. 76269 Avengers Tower not only feels independent of its predecessor from a build perspective – they both boast unique, identifiable moments throughout the experience, and in design, character and even play – but actually elevates 76178 Daily Bugle, which until now had stood alone next to much smaller modular buildings.

So yeah, the bad news is that you’re probably going to want them both, and that doesn’t come cheap.

Before you buy 76269 Avengers Tower…

…you should know the following: this is a one-of-a-kind, all-encompassing LEGO Marvel set that really does deliver everything you could want from an Avengers Tower with an unlimited budget; not a single brick is wasted in the design, which expertly realises every peculiar curve of the building through a LEGO lens; and the sheer quantity of characters might just be enough to help you look past their quality.

Should you buy 76269 Avengers Tower? That will ultimately depend on just how much you love Marvel. But if you have even the slightest interest in the MCU, you won’t find a better tribute to the past 15 years of superhero movies than this. And if you are considering buying it, and have the funds to do so, splurging on day one is actually not an unreasonable prospect: you’ll get three free gifts for your trouble, including 40601 Majisto’s Magical Workshop, 40602 Winter Market Stall and the Tower-exclusive 5008076 Taxi.

That latter gift includes a modern taxi and four minifigures – Black Panther, two Outriders and the taxi driver – which adds up to a substantial (if only loosely thematic) freebie. But it’s only available from November 24 to 27, or while stocks last, with purchases of 76269 Avengers Tower.

76269 Avengers Tower launches November 24 for £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99. Check out our full review of the triumphant LEGO Marvel set here.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
