LEGO Indiana Jones 2023 – everything we know so far

Everyone’s favourite whip-cracking adventurer is said to be making a comeback in 2023, so here’s everything we know so far about the return of LEGO Indiana Jones.

Between Indy and The Lord of the Rings, 2023 is shaping up to be a comeback year for some of the LEGO Group’s best-loved – but long-gone – licensed themes. Where Henry Jones Jr. is concerned, that’s presumably hooked to the long-awaited fifth instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise, which will finally debut in cinemas next summer.

The original run of Indy sets arrived alongside Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008 and 2009, so it’s been a very long time since his string of temples, planes, boats, cars and, erm, cemeteries were on LEGO Store shelves. Thirteen years on, here’s a complete rundown of everything we know about LEGO Indiana Jones’ rumoured return in 2023.

It’s a proper return (hello, LotR)

While LEGO The Lord of the Rings is said to be making a limited comeback in 2023, in the form of three BrickHeadz sets and a giant direct-to-consumer model, LEGO Indiana Jones currently sounds like a proper relaunch: a total of eight sets are rumoured to be on the way, potentially all of which revolve around minifigures, just like the classic theme.

The LEGO Group is partying like it’s 2008

Do ‘Fighter Plane Chase’, ‘Escape from the Lost Tomb’ and ‘The Temple of Doom’ sound familiar to you? They should: they’re all very similar (or identical) set names to those from the original run of LEGO Indiana Jones sets. And they’re also the rumoured product titles for three 2023 sets, suggesting the LEGO Group will kickstart its refreshed Indy wave by revisiting tried and tested concepts from 2008 and 2009.

It’s a 50/50 split between old and new

While those three sets will reportedly all focus on scenes and vehicles from Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, at least four of the remaining five mystery sets are thought to draw from the still-untitled fifth Indiana Jones film. If the final set is inspired by any of the classic movies, we’re looking at a distinct 50/50 split between old and new.

We’re going bigger than ever before

That final set, by the way, is currently rumoured to retail for €149.99 in Europe. That’s far and away more expensive than the original run’s priciest set, 7199 The Temple of Doom, which retailed for only $89.99 in the US – and suggests the LEGO Group has come up with an Indiana Jones set that deserves a hefty budget. A supersized 7623 Temple Escape, for instance. Or maybe a giant Ark of the Covenant? One that doesn’t melt your face, obvs.

‘Fourth Indy film? What fourth Indy film?’

At the moment, none of the rumoured LEGO Indiana Jones 2023 sets are said to be based on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Sad.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

A mix of sets based on the originals followed immediately by a mix based on the new film is expected; it’s how they typically approach a new or returning-from-a-long-dormancy theme (like how they first did this one itself back in 2008). If it goes as far as a second year, the #1 thing I’d like this time around is something from the TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles / The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. I know it’s a total pipe dream, but it’s what I’d love more than anything else from this theme.
