Is LEGO Jurassic Park Tyrannosaurus rex the biggest LEGO dinosaur to date?

While 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex is certainly a massive model, does it rank as the biggest LEGO dinosaur released to date?

The LEGO Group officially revealed 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex yesterday, with the 3,145-piece set launching next month. Measuring a whopping 105cm in length and towering over 33cm tall, the LEGO Jurassic Park creation is definitely a beast of a build.

However, while 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex is certainly a massive model in its own right, is it in fact the biggest LEGO dinosaur released to date? Sure, there have been many brick-built versions of the tyrant lizard king that have dropped over the years, from simple DUPLO creations right up to a variety of moulded T. rex figures, but will the upcoming LEGO Jurassic Park set reign supreme?

The good news for fans of prehistoric beasts is that 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex is indeed in a league of its own, managing to beat smaller similar iterations of the creature when it comes to sheer size and scale.

For instance, the dinosaur included in 2019’s 75936 Jurassic Park: T. rex Rampage measured over 22cm high, 69cm long and 17cm wide. That same year also saw the release of 21320 Dinosaur Fossils, with the LEGO Ideas set including a T. rex that was a not-too-shabby 20cm tall and 40cm long.

Not to be outdone, 2019 was also the year that 40366 LEGO House Dinosaurs dropped, with the  largest of the colourful creatures measuring over 12cm tall and 30cm long. Then there’s 31151 T. rex, a 626-piece LEGO Creator 3-in-1 build that arrived just last year, stomping into view at over 15cm high.

All of those sets pale in comparison to the upcoming 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex though, with the 1:12 scale skeleton crushing the competition to reign as the biggest LEGO dinosaur model released so far.

76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex will be launching on March 12 for Insiders members and for everyone else on March 15, with the LEGO Jurassic Park set priced at £219.99 / $249.99 / €249.99.
