The reveal of LEGO Pokémon in 2026 has caused waves throughout the communities, with many celebrating and others raising legitimate concerns.
LEGO Pokémon has been officially confirmed to be a new theme in 2026 and while there are no further details regarding what kinds of sets it will include just yet, that hasn't stopped fans from getting excited about the sheer prospect of LEGO Pokémon.
The LEGO and Pokémon communities alike have been waiting nearly 30 years for this collaboration, following a similar partnership with toy brand MEGA. Now that the MEGA partnership is coming to a close, it's time for LEGO Pokémon starting next year, with Josh Tyler on X sharing what almost everyone was likely thinking following the announcement earlier today.
We've speculated on what the theme might include starting next year, but right now details are nonexistent. That hasn't stopped fans from similarly speculating, though. "Light bricks for Pikachu’s cheeks? I feel like they've got to do something different to make these look more desirable than the MEGA counterparts," commented TheJohnny346.
Comparisons with MEGA's line of Pokémon construction toys are inevitable and while MEGA has seemingly lost the Pokémon license, TheJohnny346 has a point. The LEGO Group will want to ensure that whatever it releases is different enough to MEGA's models and including electronic elements for lights and sounds is a great way to go about it, at the risk of increasing the price.
Many are hoping for minifigures and minifigure-compatible LEGO Pokémon figures, including A-Nationverse8472, who is specifically hoping for characters from the original run of the popular Pokémon anime series. The series has since been rebooted with two new protagonists, phasing out Ash Ketchum for now, but even MEGA got to the classic character eventually.
"Biggest media company in the world, there are going to be a lot of hurting wallets. Hopefully there will be a mix of both minifig scale and brick built sets," HitmanKiller12 agrees on Reddit.
Some online are hoping for an entirely different product from this multi-year partnership though – a LEGO Pokémon video game. "I really hope this means we'll also get a LEGO Pokémon game," shares jeuv, and Amy on X agrees with the sentiment.
"If the LEGO Group takes that in-house it might actually be better than GameFreak," responds RA12220, acknowledging the recent announcement regarding the LEGO Group's in-house games development efforts.
TT Games has a LEGO video game rumoured for 2026 based on a major IP and while that would time nicely with the start of LEGO Pokémon and the 30th anniversary of the franchise, these remain only hopes for now and any kind of LEGO Pokémon game is far from confirmed.
Many online are not quite as optimistic about LEGO Pokémon following multiple frequent occurrences of scalpers targeting the Pokemon trading cards and selling them for high prices online. "I'm cautiously optimistic because my Pokémon card friends tell me horror stories about the scalpers in that community," said ad-lib1994.
"These will be scalped to high heavens, just prepare yourself now for it," noted DarthKookies. "Thankfully it's LEGO, though, and you can order directly."
"Direct purchase from LEGO might not even matter," countered mooocow in response. "Bots are rampant everywhere. The only saving grace is that LEGO is much harder to inventory than card packs."
Duke1782YT is more optimistic, hoping that the scalpers will start to target the LEGO Pokémon sets instead and have no funds left for treating the trading cards the same. Hopefully, the LEGO Group has plans in place for the inevitably high demand for the models.
