LEGO Speed Champions cars ‘not necessarily about speed’

Despite its name, cars eligible for LEGO Speed Champions don’t necessarily have to be fast, the design team has revealed.

With a name like Speed Champions, you might think that the LEGO theme’s focus would be on fast cars but a new interview with designer Chris Stamp has confirmed that speed has less to do with the selection process than it may appear.

“I think we have a degree of flexibility, within reason,” stated Chris. “I would not consider the Aston Martin DB5 to be particularly associated with speed and I think choosing iconic subjects is more important than focusing exclusively on quick vehicles.”

“Fast and Furious is probably the most famous film franchise associated with cars and provides ample source material. Among many possible vehicles, the Dodge Charger is arguably the most identifiable and is obviously affiliated with the main character from the series, giving an opportunity to produce the Dominic Toretto minifigure. Since we are exploring Fast and Furious at minifigure-scale, including Dom is a necessity really!”

76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T can certainly be considered iconic subjects given the popularity of their respective franchises.

Looking through the portfolio of LEGO Speed Champions, this concept rings true with models like 76905 Ford GT Heritage Edition and Bronco R as well as 76908 Lamborghini Countach representing recognisable cars.

“For now, there is no need to restrict ourselves to specific vehicles,” the designer continued to Brickset. “Speed Champions is about building fans’ dream vehicle garage, without limitations on what they might be.”

What this ‘dream vehicle garage’ will include in the future is unknown though another segment of the interview hints at more movie-based Speed Champions sets.

Both 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T are available now on the official online store worldwide as the latest LEGO Speed Champions sets.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
