LEGO Star Wars magazine teases potential new TIE Bomber

The latest issue of the LEGO Star Wars magazine includes a first look at what may be a new minifigure-scale TIE Bomber set.

While regular TIE Fighters have come and gone plenty of times in the LEGO line-up – most recently in 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter (review) – we haven’t seen a LEGO version of the Empire Strikes Back variant since 2003’s 4479 TIE Bomber.

That may be about to change, however, as Issue 69 of Immediate Media’s LEGO Star Wars magazine includes a brick-built rendition of the much-requested Imperial ship. It’s only in comic form in the mag, but has clearly been drawn from a build assembled with real bricks – suggesting that it could one day materialise as an official set.

The LEGO Group has already implicitly acknowledged that we’re long overdue a new TIE Bomber in 2020’s Ultimate Collector Series fan vote. The classic fighter ultimately lost out to the Republic Gunship (which is due to launch later this year), but its very presence on the shortlist indicates the LEGO Star Wars design team is aware of the demand for a new TIE variant.

We’ll have to wait and see whether anything comes of this tease, but it’s worth remembering that this is an officially-licensed magazine, and is mainly read by kids – so the Star Wars team could well be attempting to seed the idea of a new LEGO TIE Bomber with a wider audience ahead of any eventual release.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
