More live-action LEGO projects we need to see
Live-action LEGO projects are the latest craze, and with the announcement of a Friends musical and a NINJAGO film, there’s plenty of potential.
The LEGO Group announced earlier today that a musical LEGO Friends special is coming next year, from High School Musical’s Kenny Ortega. It follows the news that a live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie is in the works, as well, and the doors are evidently open to live-action adaptations of themes, whether they be specials or movies.
With both Friends and NINJAGO now entering the world of live-action, there are plenty of other original themes for the LEGO Group to consider for future projects. Note that this is only speculation, but it’s clear that the doors are open for LEGO live-action adaptations now. Here are some original themes that may well work with the live-action touch.
LEGO City buddy cop series

LEGO City’s lengthy history of police sets immediately draws to mind the buddy cop genre, resulting in a live-action series focusing on the chaotic daily life of the LEGO City police and the other emergency services. It would do well to lean into the chaos, exploring how stunts, space, natural environments and other facets of LEGO City affect the typical police storylines.
LEGO Classic Space space opera

While it’s not quite as current as the likes of Friends, NINJAGO and City, Classic Space has a spot in the modern-day portfolio with the constant stream of new coloured astronaut minifigures and comeback builds. A live-action adaptation of Classic Space as a space opera would offer an opportunity to explore the factions of this world, which are constantly expanding. It’s hard to see this nostalgic theme inspiring anything more than a special, and still being financially successful, but there’s genuine potential.
LEGO City race special

The idea of a fantastical LEGO race movie is nothing new, though Jorge R. Gutiérrez’s The Billion Brick Race didn’t quite manage to reach the starting line. That doesn’t mean the concept needs to stop there, though. LEGO City’s long-running range of vehicles is fantastical, but grounded, and they could work well in a live-action setting. The theme’s world would even work well as the backdrop for a high-stakes race special.
LEGO Architecture documentary

A documentary on the evolution of building design and construction could take a page out of Piece by Piece’s book and use LEGO as a platform to relate to a younger audience. That doesn’t necessarily mean it would need to be entirely animated, but instead feature upscaled LEGO elements for diagrams, similarly to how the LEGO Friends musical is described.
LEGO Technic action movie

Following the recent LEGO Technic Fast & Furious scene recreations from expert filmmakers, there’s clear potential for a LEGO Technic movie, and the grounded setting of the theme lends itself well to a live-action movie. A family-friendly take on Fast & Furious would be one option, but creatively depicting the cars as LEGO Technic vehicles, falling apart accordingly as the action unfolds.
