New LEGO movies still in development at Universal Pictures
Despite time running out on a five-year deal between the LEGO Group and Universal Pictures, new LEGO movies are reportedly still in the works.
The LEGO Movie recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, with the brick-based film having been a huge hit at the time and the catalyst for its own sequel, as well as cinematic outings for The LEGO Batman Movie and The LEGO NINJAGO Movie.
The LEGO Group’s development deal at the time was with Warner Bros. and when it ended the company then signed a new five-year agreement with Universal Pictures. However, there’s only one year of that deal left to run and no additional LEGO movies have been released to date, although the upcoming Pharrell Williams biopic Piece by Piece is due out later this year.
In a new interview with Variety, the LEGO Group’s head of global entertainment, Jill Wilfert, has shared some hints as to the future of the company’s big screen output and where the two creative partners are currently focusing their efforts.
Although she declined to confirm reports that the Nee brothers are attached to direct a hybrid animated/live-action LEGO film, Wilfert did state that the LEGO Group and Universal Pictures are still in ‘active development on a whole range of ideas and concepts.’
The interview goes on to discuss the LEGO Movie’s long seven-year journey from conceptualisation to successful release, how the LEGO Group may have released too many movies in a short space of time and the choice of Universal Pictures as its current development partner.
Piece by Piece will be released worldwide on October 11, 2024, and rumours suggest that the movie may be supported by at least one LEGO set.
