That new LEGO set teased by designers isn’t 21332 The Globe after all

The imminent reveal of a new LEGO set teased by two designers earlier this month wasn’t referring to 21332 The Globe after all – so what could it be?

When James May and George Gilliatt began teasing a new set that they’d co-designed, all signs seemed to point to a future LEGO Ideas product. In a tweet marking his second anniversary at the LEGO Group, James – who designed 21327 Typewriter – revealed that he’s working on LEGO Ideas sets again, and George responded with a cryptic reference to a new set being announced ‘very soon’.

At the time, we surmised he was referring to 21332 The Globe, given rumours suggested an early 2022 release for Guillaume Roussel’s Ideas set. However, we now have a copy of the model in hand, and the instructions reveal that it was designed by Luka Kapeter and Cristina Benescu – which means George and James have actually been teasing a completely different set.

In his initial tweet, James also mentioned that he’s worked on Creator, Friends, Disney and 18+ sets over the past two years, so any one of those could theoretically be the theme in question here. If the set the pair co-designed is getting a specific reveal – the kind accompanied by a media campaign and press release – an 18+ model feels like the safest bet.

What exactly that might be is still a mystery, as we know surprisingly little about the direct-to-consumer slate for 2022 so far. The rumour mill has brought word of huge sets in licensed themes like Star Wars and Super Heroes, but nothing under LEGO for Adults (formerly Creator Expert) beyond 10302, an ‘entertainment IP’ set thought to be launching in May.

That doesn’t quite fit the bill for ‘very soon’ (in George’s words), so it looks like it’s back to playing the waiting game on this one.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Could it be the working lighthouse that won the IDEAS event last year…?
