Mysterious piece supposedly from cancelled LEGO Indiana Jones set sells for over $600

A LEGO voodoo doll supposedly included in a cancelled LEGO Indiana Jones set has sold for more than $600 on eBay – despite little evidence it’s actually legitimate.

Billed as a ‘super-rare “Krypto” voodoo doll’ from the cancelled 77014 The Temple of Doom – which was pulled from the rebooted LEGO Indiana Jones line just before it hit shelves in April 2023 – the unusual element surfaced on eBay from a seller in Norway on December 27, with a starting price of $100. By the time the auction closed on January 3, it had ballooned to a final asking price of $610.

Ten different bidders placed a total of 34 individual bids on the nanofigure, which represents a real leap of faith from the collectors involved. The only image of 77014 The Temple of Doom that appeared online was grainy at best, and to say most of the details were difficult to make out would be a charitable appraisal of the situation. We’re certainly straining to see a voodoo doll nanofigure anywhere in the mix…

Verifying the seller’s claims of authenticity is therefore a tricky task, and while they claim the piece has ‘original LEGO markings and numbers’, none of those are visible in the photos shared in the listing. And if it is the real deal, the question remains: how did they get their hands on it? That’s not just one, by the way, but three: the original element that sold for $610, a misprinted version thrown in for free with that auction, and a third (and apparently final) one that’s just gone up with a starting price of $350.

In the seller’s defence, their feedback is 100% positive from 66 items sold, many of which are misprinted or rare LEGO elements. But the piece’s provenance isn’t the only gamble the winner of this auction has taken: there’s always a chance, however small, that the LEGO Group retools and releases 77014 The Temple of Doom somewhere down the line. If that does happen, the value of this voodoo doll (should it make the cut) would positively plummet.

For now, it looks like a three-of-a-kind piece – at least until any other examples surface online from other sources, which might then help to verify the authenticity of these elements.

If you’re interested in adding LEGO Indy to your collection without spending a frankly incredible amount of money on a single piece, the three LEGO Indiana Jones sets that did launch in 2023 are all available right now, including Brick FanaticsLEGO set of the year in 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
