Retiring soon: LEGO Icons 10278 Police Station discounted by 20%

John Lewis has slashed the price of one of three modular buildings retiring this year, offering the chance to snap up 10278 Police Station with a discount for possibly the last time.

The LEGO Group is preparing to shake up its selection of modular buildings currently available to buy as we head into 2024, putting 10255 Assembly Square, 10270 Bookshop and 10278 Police Station out to pasture. That means time is running short to add those sets to your collection before they’re gone – but you can currently snap up 2021’s set in what may be its last sale before it leaves shelves for good at John Lewis.

The 2,923-piece set usually retails for £169.99, but is marked down by 20% at John Lewis. That brings the final price to just £135.99 – saving £34 on its RRP – with free delivery, which is a bargain for a modular building in 2023. By contrast, 10297 Boutique Hotel and 10312 Jazz Club both retail for £199.99 each, while 2024’s new set is rumoured to come in at £259.99 (albeit for an extra 1,000 pieces).

10278 Police Station is the first set in the Modular Buildings Collection hooked to an emergency service since 2009’s 10197 Fire Brigade, and has also enjoyed the shortest shelf life of any set in the series since 2019’s 10264 Corner Garage. By the time it leaves shelves at the end of 2023, it will have been in production for just under three years.

That was once the standard timeline for a modular building, but that pattern has been upended by 10255 Assembly Square (originally released in 2017) and 10270 Bookshop (released in 2020), both of which are also retiring this year.

The end result is that 10278 Police Station has had a comparatively brief time on shelves, so you have to assume that fewer copies are out there in the wild – and that usually means a higher aftermarket price further down the road. If this set is on your wish list, now is the time to grab it.
