Rumoured exclusive LEGO Star Wars Captain Rex minifigure could still show up again in 2024

The rumoured LEGO Star Wars Captain Rex minifigure is currently said to be exclusive to this year’s second UCS set – but there is a way it could still show up in a cheaper model in 2024.

In the nearly two years since the backlash to 75309 Republic Gunship’s Mace Windu and Clone Commander minifigures, the LEGO Group has sought to include exclusive characters with Ultimate Collector Series sets. 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder includes the most detailed C-3PO minifigure to date, complete with dual-moulded grey legs, while the upcoming 75355 X-wing Starfighter gives Luke dual-moulded legs and printed arms.

The LEGO Star Wars team has said there are ‘no fixed rules’ around exclusive minifigures in UCS sets, but you can see that it’s trying to give collectors of its most expensive sets something unique. We haven’t seen the uber-detailed Threepio in any other sets, and likely never will – at least while 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder is still on shelves.

Rumours of a UCS Republic Venator Star Destroyer have been slightly bittersweet, then, as Promobricks claims the $600 set will include our first Phase II Captain Rex minifigure since 2013’s 75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar. It’s a long-requested character that could end up locked behind one of the most expensive LEGO Star Wars sets to date – but unlike C-3PO and Luke, there are grounds for bringing Rex to another set in 2024.

That’s because this specific Captain Rex minifigure is said to feature a patch on the side of his head, recreating the character’s design after his inhibitor chip was removed in The Clone Wars. It’s a very specific detail to mention in a rumour report – and could be the perfect way for the LEGO Group to give buyers of the Venator an exclusive Rex, while still bringing the character into smaller and cheaper sets.

All the designers would need to do is swap out Rex’s head for a different print without the patch, while still maintaining the same torso, legs, unique helmet and (hopefully) cloth pauldron and kama. The clone captain would then be available to many more LEGO Star Wars fans, but the version included in the UCS Venator wouldn’t lose all of its appeal.

Besides, 75367 Venator Star Destroyer is also said to come with a minifigure of a younger Admiral Yularen – as seen in The Clone Wars – which is a character obscure enough to potentially remain forever exclusive to that set (without too many complaints from the LEGO Star Wars community). In effect, the LEGO Group might just have cracked the best of both worlds with its minifigure selection for the second 2023 UCS set…

That’s if these rumours are true, of course. Until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group on what’s coming in the second half of the year, we can’t say for certain that a UCS Venator and Captain Rex minifigure really are just around the corner. For now, check out the table below for the entire LEGO Star Wars 2023 slate as it stands.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
