The secret origin of LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2’s Goliath revealed

The recently-revealed LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 includes a mysterious Goliath minifigure, whose secret origin has now been revealed.

The LEGO Group recently confirmed the existence of its next CMF line-up, with 71039 Marvel Series 2 launching on September 1. The collection features 12 characters culled from a number of live-action and animated Disney+ shows, with each minifigure priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 and due to arrive in new cardboard packaging.

While most of the minifigures included in 71039 Marvel Series 2 may be familiar to the majority of MCU fans, there’s one addition that may cause some head-scratching. Recent rumours suggested that Jonathan Majors’ Kang might be part of the latest CMF roster, but instead the collection features Goliath, a size-changing hero also known as former S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist, Bill Foster.

The character was first referred to as being part of the MCU in 2018’s Ant-Man and The Wasp (but not seen in costume), with actor Laurence Fishburne revealing he was a member of Project G.O.L.I.A.T.H. alongside Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym. Now, thanks to the reveal of a Hasbro action figure based on the same character, the reason for Goliath’s inclusion in 71039 Marvel Series 2 makes a lot more sense.

The second series of the animated What If…? is scheduled to arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2023 and will consist of nine episodes. Goliath is set to be featured in the upcoming show and is also part of Hasbro’s new Marvel Legends range of collectibles launching in October. Details on the action figure’s packaging state that, “in this universe, an alien threat forces Bill Foster to put aside his differences with former partner Hank Pym to join S.H.I.E.L.D.’s newest team of heroes.”

Boasting a silver, blue and white costume, Goliath is a size-changing superhero with abilities similar to Scott Lang’s Giant-Man form. It’s not yet been revealed that the version included in the upcoming 71039 Marvel Series 2 looks like under the character’s helmet, but the CMF does come with a microscale Ant-Man figure and is featured in an early review of the upcoming collection right here.
