Six brand new LEGO sets to prioritise in January 2023

Dozens of new LEGO sets are launching on January 1, and we’ve sifted through them to pick out six worth pushing to the top of your priority list.

If – like us – you’ve still got a backlog of sets to buy longer than you care to admit, you might not be looking too closely at the January 2023 releases. After all, that wish list doesn’t really need to get any bigger. But if you are like us, you also won’t be able to resist the lure of fresh LEGO – especially with so much good stuff landing in just over a week.

From Star Wars and Marvel to Friends and Icons, here are our top picks for sets to place near the top of your shopping list on January 1 (backlog be damned).

6 – 76247 The Hulkbuster: The Battle of Wakanda

Theme: Marvel Price: £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 Pieces: 385 Release date: January 1, 2023

Okay, okay, it’s another Hulkbuster. But it’s not just another Hulkbuster. In fact, 76247 The Hulkbuster: The Battle of Wakanda is probably the best big suit of Iron Man armour to date, and easily surpasses 76210 Hulkbuster for a tenth of the price. In what looks to be a pretty solid LEGO Marvel wave in general in January, this is the stand-out for us.

5 – 71785 Jay’s Titan Mech

Theme: NINJAGO Price: £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 Pieces: 794 Release date: January 1, 2023

There are possibly too many mechs launching on January 1, but if Marvel isn’t your thing, the clear winner out of them all is 71785 Jay’s Titan Mech. With unique shaping, clever design techniques and a bold colour scheme, it’s another clear example of NINJAGO’s mechs transcending the action theme to appeal to a wider fanbase. Pair it with 71738 Zane’s Titan Mech Battle for maximum results.

4 – 80044 Monkie Kid’s Team Hideout

Theme: Monkie Kid Price: £89.99 / $139.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,582 Release date: January 1, 2023

LEGO Monkie Kid continues to push boundaries in 2023 with another stunning flagship set. 80044 Monkie Kid’s Team Hideout combines an engaging build with a gorgeous aesthetic for a set you really don’t want to miss – and given Monkie Kid sets are rarely discounted, you don’t need to feel bad about picking it up day one, either. (It helps that it’s already great value at RRP.)

3 – 41732 Downtown Flower and Design Stores

Theme: Friends Price: £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99 Pieces: 2,010 Release date: January 1, 2023

If you want to get a taste of the LEGO Friends reboot, aim high: the best-looking set in the January 2023 wave is also the most expensive. That hopefully won’t put you off sampling 41732 Downtown Flower and Design Stores, which is the mini-doll theme’s biggest set of all time, and easily its most ambitious in scope, architecture and aesthetics.

2 – 75347 TIE Bomber

Theme: Star Wars Price: £59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99 Pieces: 625 Release date: January 1, 2023

Just three LEGO Star Wars sets are soaring on to LEGO Store shelves (real and virtual) on January 1, and while there are things to enjoy about 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter and 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack, 75347 TIE Bomber is pulling our focus for 2023 – and rightly so. As the first minifigure-scale rendition of the ship in 20 years, it’s very nearly the perfect LEGO Star Wars set.

1 – 10312 Jazz Club

Theme: Icons Price: £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99 Pieces: 2,899 Release date: January 1, 2023

For many LEGO fans, picking up the new modular building on January 1 has become a ritual. And if you’ve got the budget and space to spare, you could join them in 2023 with 10312 Jazz Club. The latest modular building has split opinion among LEGO fans, but whether you’re buying it to slide into your LEGO city as-is or want to make a few modifications, it’s available January 1 for VIP members (and January 4 for everyone else).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
