Latest Star Wars: The Bad Batch episode makes us miss LEGO Podracers

The latest episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 has dropped today and makes us yearn for LEGO Star Wars Podracer sets of yesteryear.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 continues today with an all-new episode of the hit animated show arriving on Disney+. The series chronicles the adventures of Clone Force 99 (and Omega), as they attempt to stay off the radar of a rising Empire and figure out their place in a universe emerging from a devastating galactic war. (Spoilers ahead)

‘Faster’ showcases Tech, Wrecker and Omega accompanying smuggler Cid to the Safa Toma Speedway where they get to witness riot racing . This high-speed sport will be instantly recognisable to long-time Star Wars fans as a version of Podracing, which was first introduced in The Phantom Menace, although the pastime now appears to have been upgraded with lethal blasters.

Based on George Lucas’ love of fast cars and hot rods, Podracing featured a variety of alien species battling it out on a challenging track whilst attempting to steer two massive independent engines attached to a small pod. The only human to have ever had the ability to successfully win at the sport was a young Anakin Skywalker, with the Chosen One going on to become an excellent starfighter pilot, a Jedi Knight and, ultimately, Darth Vader.

The vehicles themselves have been represented in previous years by nine LEGO Star Wars models ranging from 75258 Anakin’s Podracer – 20th Anniversary Edition released in 2019 to a tiny Anakin’s Podracer included in 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar in 2020. Considering there were so many distinctive Podracers and pilots glimpsed in Episode I, we’re surprised more LEGO Star Wars sets featuring the vehicles haven’t been created over the years.

With 2024 being the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Podracers might form part of any potential plans the LEGO Group may have for the theme, although that’s pure wish fulfilment on our part.

Star Wars: The Batch Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+ for all subscribers, with episode 5 arriving on January 25, 2023. To find out more about the latest season of the show, head on over to our dedicated Star Wars sister site, Jedinet.
