Tom Hiddleston may be bowing out of future Marvel projects

Veteran Marvel actor Tom Hiddleston has claimed he’s a ‘temporary torchbearer’ for the character of Loki, suggesting new LEGO Lokis could be on the (distant) horizon.

Tom Hiddleston has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its early days, first appearing in 2011 movie Thor. He’s gone on to establish himself as one of the film series’ most beloved villains, and earned his own Disney+ series in 2021. This has been confirmed for a second season, and is likely to attract many Marvel fans upon its release.

Of course, Loki – as a mythological character – is much older than the Marvel character, something Hiddleston himself has acknowledged. As recently reported by Variety, Hiddleston commented:

“I’m a temporary torchbearer, I’ve always thought that. It’s a great role. It’s an archetype, the trickster god, the agent of chaos. I’m just here interpreting that for the time being. Loki has been here for centuries and will be here for centuries more and I’m just stepping into that silhouette for now.”

While Hiddleston has affirmed a long-term commitment to the role elsewhere, other early Marvel stars (such as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans) have long since departed the film series. Passion for a role isn’t necessarily enough to keep an actor in it forever.

Still, the possibility of new LEGO Lokis is intriguing. Tom Hiddleston’s interpretation of the character has appeared in several LEGO sets over the years, in a variety of outfits depending on context. The Collectible Minifigures theme has also given us radically different Lokis, with female and crocodilian versions of the character both available in 2021. If Tom Hiddleston does bow out of the MCU, that selection of LEGO Lokis is likely to expand.

While Loki is currently absent from The LEGO Marvel theme, his brother Thor is making a triumphant return in 76208 The Goat Boat on April 26. UK LEGO fans can also pick him up with this month’s LEGO Marvel magazine.
