TT Games developers pitched LEGO Bloodborne, a ‘spooky gothic adventure’

A former employee at TT Games has revealed that a team of developers pitched a ‘LEGO Bloodborne’ video game, described as a ‘spooky gothic adventure’.

While TT Games’ only LEGO title to actually arrive on consoles over the past few years has been the long-delayed LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, rumours suggest that other projects have been on the table – and then off the table – with almost alarming consistency. Titles based on Disney, Guardians of the Galaxy and more have reportedly been shelved in recent months.

At least one of those is said to have been in development for a number of years, but one potential game that never quite made it that far was apparently a ‘spooky gothic adventure’ inspired by FromSoftware’s famously-difficult 2015 title Bloodborne.

“Myself and a few others made a fantastic pitch for what was essentially a LEGO Bloodborne game,” tweeted former TT Games developer Shaun Mooney. “[It was] child-friendly of course but a full-on, stylised spooky gothic adventure. [It] was well liked but was put on the shelf by new management at TT.”

Mooney clarified that the game used LEGO Monster Fighters as a ‘jumping-off point’, and the goal was to ultimately tie it to Universal’s stable of classic monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, The Mummy, The Invisible Man and so on. But it sounds like it was ultimately a victim of TT Games’ massive upheaval in 2021 and 2022, with dozens of staff departing amid allegations of ‘crunch culture’ at the studio – and new management stepping in.

The LEGO Group is believed to have subsequently terminated its exclusivity agreement with TT Games, which reportedly gave the developers the power to veto other projects. The first AAA LEGO title from a rival publisher will debut next month, in the form of 2K Games’ LEGO 2K Drive.

TT Games is still thought to be working on more LEGO games, however, including a Harry Potter title that could end up being as ambitious as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Whatever comes next from the studio, it probably won’t be LEGO Bloodborne – nor the other mystery projects Mooney teased in a follow-up tweet…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
