What’s up with the rumoured LEGO Star Wars 25th-anniversary minifigures?

Rumoured minifigures for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars raise some questions, but reframing the celebration may clear things up.

Special minifigures are rumoured to be scattered around a variety of LEGO Star Wars sets later this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the theme. Should the reports be accurate, this could include Darth Malak, Cal Kestis, Young Leia, Fives and Darth Vader in a white suit (also known as Infinities Darth Vader). These are believed to be inspired by various games, comics and series, covering a wide range of Star Wars projects beyond the movies, which have been covered in LEGO extensively.

While there have undoubtedly been a lot of LEGO Star Wars sets based on the movies, we’re still missing some key minifigures. The rumours have yet to be officially confirmed but so far, there’s no word on the debut of Shmi, a new Queen Amidala and more Kaminoans following the release of Taun We in 75333 Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi Starfighter.

Luke Starkiller – the concept version of Luke Skywalker inspired by Ralph McQuarrie’s classic Star Wars concept paintings – could be another option, and he was featured as a minifigure in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Instead, these rumoured minifigures seem to be focusing on projects beyond the big screen, showcasing obscure characters or versions of characters that otherwise likely wouldn’t be covered within LEGO Star Wars. Cal Kestis was missed in the only Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order set, 75335 BD-1, and the likes of Infinities Darth Vader would almost certainly never have a chance at a Star Wars minifigure.

That said, rumour has it that both and more are getting minifigures for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars. Looking solely at the cast of guest minifigures, the focus appears to be on characters that celebrate the world of Star Wars beyond the movies.

Some may have been expecting more movie characters and while nothing has been officially confirmed, you may be able to keep your expectations in check by considering that this isn’t an anniversary of Star Wars. That would almost certainly focus on its most iconic characters, but this year is an anniversary of LEGO Star Wars. There are few better ways to mark the occasion than with obscure characters that we likely wouldn’t receive under any other circumstance.

Another good way to commemorate a major anniversary for the theme would be with remakes of classic minifigure designs, as they have already done for 20th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars. That said, the concept may be coming back for the 25th anniversary according to rumours. The reported 75388 Jedi Bob’s Starfighter is said to include the legendary LEGO Jedi complete with yellow skin, instead of a completely updated design. While he’s rumoured to not be a special guest, we’d still consider him part of the list thanks to his legendary status.

Bringing back Jedi Bob could be the ideal way to celebrate 25 years of LEGO Star Wars – by calling back to a couple of key moments from the theme’s history with a minifigure that, once again, wouldn’t be brought back in any other situation.

For instance, Hasbro’s line of Star Wars figures has covered a wide variety of obscure characters (including Infinities Darth Vader and Cal Kestis) but it almost certainly wouldn’t ever include the likes of Jedi Bob, who is incredibly specific to LEGO Star Wars and its community.

Based on what’s rumoured, it might be wise to adjust your expectations for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars. 2024 isn’t a Star Wars anniversary – it’s a LEGO Star Wars anniversary and it offers a chance make minifigures that wouldn’t happen otherwise. LEGO Star Wars can be so much more than just the movies, but it doesn’t often have the chance to look beyond them normally, which makes complete sense.

We’ll have to see exactly what happens, if anything, for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars later this year. At the time of writing, nothing has been officially confirmed and we’d advise taking everything in this report with caution just in case.
