Why isn’t Grogu playable in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga?

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga includes more than 300 playable characters, but an especially popular child is only a companion in the game.

The reveal of the DLC for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has confirmed that Grogu is only a companion to Din Djarin’s playable minifigure and likely cannot be controlled separately. For those who somehow haven’t heard, Grogu is also known as Baby Yoda and was arguably the breakout star of both seasons of The Mandalorian. He has gone on to get a standalone Star Wars set – 75318 The Child and multiple minifigures including a festive variant.

While the specific details of what companion characters are and what they can do have yet to be confirmed, it does mean that you won’t be able to take Grogu on a road trip across the galaxy without his Mandalorian caretaker. While that might not be a dealbreaker, a revelation in the latest trailer has proven that it would have been possible to make the character playable.

The Building the Galaxy trailer takes time to share that Babu Frik is playable in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga with a clip of gameplay demonstrating that the miniature minifigure is as formidable as normal characters. For context, he features a similar brick to what Grogu uses in the game. This shows that size was never an issue for Grogu, but what might be the reason for him being a companion then?

While this is only speculation, it seems possible that given the popularity of Grogu, Disney is prepared to be protective of the fictional Star Wars character for the sake of future merchandise and the fact that, despite being over 50 years old, he is still a child.

Taking this into account, allowing players to pit Grogu against the forces of Separatists, monstrous creatures and the Empire without Din Djarin – even in the comedic world of LEGO Star Wars – might have been seen as controversial by Disney, leading to him being accompanied by the minifigure Mandalorian at all times.

With LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga releasing in just over two weeks at the time of writing and development recently going gold, it’s more than likely too late to make Grogu as playable as the other characters, but he will be in the game alongside Din Djarin and we can at least enjoy his adorable presence what it is when the title is available from April 5, 2022.

What do we know about the LEGO Shop itself selling the game? At the moment it’s available anywhere BUT there and obviously I want to buy it from LEGO for the points.

    Thanks 🙂
