Disappointing opening weekend box office for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part
Despite broadly positive critical reaction, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part has fallen significantly short of its projected opening weekend takings.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part opened in cinemas on Friday, and has fallen significantly short of what it was projected to reach in the USA. It was expected to achieve $50 million, but is only on track for a $31.1 million opening weekend. That will still make it the biggest grossing move of the weekend, easily beating out its live action competition.
It proves a disappointment for Warner Bros. as it means its opening is lower than that of The LEGO Batman Movie, which sold $53 million worth of tickets, itself down on the $69 million that The LEGO Movie sold during its opening weekend. That puts the fourth film ahead of The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, which grossed a particularly low $20 million during its opening weekend. With a budget suspected to be around $100 million – and a massive marketing campaign on top of that – this film has cost more than any previous film in the series.
Deadline suggests that the reasons behind the low take may include too many LEGO films having been released in the past few years and a lacklustre marketing campaign that did not define what is different about the sequel compared to the original.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is in cinemas now.
