How to find airtanks for your LEGO 40687 Alien Space Diner astronauts

The LEGO Classic Space astronaut minifigures in the new 40687 Alien Space Diner gift-with-purchase don’t have airtanks, but there are a couple of ways you can get your hands on them.

Available from today through May 26 (or while stocks last) with orders above £90 / $100 / €100, 40687 Alien Space Diner includes two Classic Space astronauts in orange and white. It’s the first time the orange astronaut has appeared outside of DK Books’ LEGO Minifigure: A Visual History New Edition, while the white astronaut has made regular appearances since the dawn of the LEGO Space theme.

But whether these are your first and only white and orange astronauts or you just want to update them to match the rest of your collection, you’re going to need airtanks to complete the look. The good news is that they’re readily available through a couple of different sources, and you don’t necessarily need to break the bank to pick them up.

Orange and white airtanks – Pick a Brick

Both orange and white airtanks are currently available through Pick a Brick, where you can acquire them for as little as 19p and 13p respectively. But things get a little messier when you factor in service fees: the orange airtanks are marked as ‘bestseller’, while their white counterparts are not. That means you’ll create two different baskets when adding them both to your order, and for each one you’ll need to reach £11 worth of pieces to remove the £5.50 service fee.

Popping the airtanks on to an order that otherwise qualifies for 40687 Alien Space Diner through sets alone isn’t really viable, but this is a good way to get your hands on brand new pieces if you’re placing a larger Pick a Brick order anyway. Otherwise, you could always find a bunch of pals and do a group order for dozens of airtanks…

Orange and white airtanks – BrickLink

If you don’t have a need for additional LEGO elements outside of these airtanks, BrickLink might be a safer bet. You’re still going to be paying delivery fees, so buying more stuff is advisable, but there are plenty of sellers with copious stock of both orange and white airtanks. The orange versions start at 16p (or 22p from UK sellers), while the white versions can be had for a literal penny.

Picking both pieces up from one seller would be most efficient – add them both to a wanted list and use the ‘easy buy’ function to find a store with stock – but the long and short of it is that these are not expensive pieces. Why the LEGO Group couldn’t just add them to 40687 Alien Space Diner is anyone’s guess, but at least you can grab them pretty cheaply on the aftermarket.

40687 Alien Space Diner is available now with orders above £90 / $100 / €100, while 30663 Space Hoverbike and 30682 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance are free when spending £45 / $50 / €50 on LEGO DREAMZzzCityTechnic or Friends sets until May 21.

Two new LEGO space-themed sets will arrive on shelves for LEGO Insiders on May 15 in 10341 NASA Artemis Space Launch System and 31212 The Milky Way Galaxy.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
