Fantastic Beasts is ‘parked’ according to franchise director

The director of the Fantastic Beasts franchise has stated that it is currently ‘parked’ and that news of five films came as a surprise.

David Yates, director of the first three Fantastic Beasts films, has commented on the status of the franchise in a new interview with Total Film and following similar news in 2022. At the time of writing, three out of five Fantastic Beasts movies have been released with at least some plans for a fourth and fifth entry, but no word on when they will arrive.

“With ‘Beasts,’ it’s all just parked,” Yates shared. “We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun but it was tough. We were actually filming when there wasn’t a vaccine. Thankfully, no one got sick, but we did have the most detailed protocols in place.”

Parked may refer to there being no progress being made on future entries at this time while the director works on other projects. Whether or not it will become unparked has yet to be confirmed. Another part of the interview reveals that the news of five Fantastic Beasts films came as a surprise to David Yates when it was announced by JK Rowling.

“The idea that there were going to be five films was a surprise to most of us,” said Yates. “Joanne (JK Rowling) just mentioned it spontaneously, at a press screening once. No one had told us there were going to be five, we’d committed to the first one. I’m sure at some point, we’ll be back. But yeah, I haven’t spoken to Joanne, I haven’t spoken to producer David Heyman, I haven’t spoken to Warner Bros; we’re just taking a pause.”

The director clarifies that the franchise is currently paused, though the question of whether or not it will become unpaused remains. The first two films received a notable number of LEGO sets, including BrickHeadz, Collectible Minifigures and LEGO Dimensions packs. However, it might be wise to not expect any further Fantastic Beasts LEGO entries for the foreseeable future.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

I respect you Decision but I don’t like that it has been left on a cliff hanger
