Five key characters missing from the LEGO Ideas Hocus Pocus set

LEGO Ideas 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage includes six minifigures and one cat – but is still missing five key characters from the 1993 cult classic.

Unveiled earlier this week ahead of a VIP early access release on July 1, 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage is based on a LEGO Ideas project by Belgian designer Amber Veyt, which in turn is inspired by Disney’s 1993 movie Hocus Pocus. Included in the box are six minifigures: Winifred Sanderson, Sarah Sanderson, Mary Sanderson, Max Dennison, Dani Dennison and Allison Watts.

Thackery Binx also shows up in cat form, but otherwise that’s your lot. It’s a significantly smaller number of minifigures than Veyt originally pitched in her Ideas project, and means we’re left without a handful of characters integral not only to the movie, but the specific scenes that play out in and around the Sanderson Sisters’ cottage.

Given the odds of getting a second Hocus Pocus set feel pretty slim – don’t forget, this is a 1993 movie with a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – you might have to turn to the custom minifigure scene for these five characters…

Emily Binx

While young Emily Binx gets a nod in 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage through a stickered tombstone, she really deserves her own minifigure here. Granted, it would have been a pretty dark moment for a LEGO set – the film opens with her death at the hands of the three witches – but the designers could have played it off as a nod to the happier ending.

Emily’s older brother Thackery is technically present as a cat, but as with Emily, a regular minifigure would have been much appreciated too: how else to better play out the opening of the movie in 1693? 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage specifically includes the option to remove its museum signage and build the house as it stood in the 17th century, so it’s a shame we don’t have the two characters required for those scenes.

Ernie ‘Ice’ and Jay

Two local bullies who cause trouble for Max in Salem, Ernie ‘Ice’ and Jay don’t have what you’d call starring roles in Hocus Pocus. But they show up frequently enough that Veyt saw fit to include them in her LEGO Ideas project, and they even find themselves locked up in cages in the Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage by the end of the movie – so they’re relevant to this specific set, too. They would have been fun to have, but perhaps not as essential as the rest of the characters on this list.

Billy Butcherson

Maybe the biggest miss from 21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage is Billy Butcherson, the reanimated corpse who spends most of the movie pursuing Max, Dani and Allison – until he finally manages to cut apart his lips (previously sewn shut) and tell the witches how he really feels. He has arguably the biggest role in the movie behind the characters included in the set, and even plays a pivotal role in the finale, so his omission here is baffling.

Check out the image below for Veyt’s concepts for all five of these characters.

21341 Disney Hocus Pocus: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage launches on July 1 for VIP members, and July 4 for everyone else, for £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Totally agree on the missed mini figures, especially Billy! Hopefully I can purchase the 5 they missed from somewhere!

I am a big Hocus Pocus fan and for me not having Billy Butcherson is a really big miss by Lego. Kind of ruins the set for me. Would have liked to have had all the others but can live without them. But Billy is the most iconic character besides the 3 Sanderson sisters. His image is used almost as much as theirs on merchandise and promoting Hocus Pocus. To me this shows that Lego does not do their research or bother having people involved that are truely knowledgable in the particular genre of the set they are making.
