LEGO 2024 modular building all but confirmed by new listing
The existence of next year’s LEGO modular building is now all but confirmed, thanks to a new listing for a 2024 gift-with-purchase.
An initial list of LEGO Icons sets for 2024 has so far not included anything that could realistically be the next modular building, given all four models come in at under €79.99. Even if the LEGO Group is planning a shake-up of the LEGO Icons subtheme following the imminent retirement of three of its sets (and a seemingly wider shift towards cheaper 18+ products), it’s difficult to imagine a modular building squeezing into that budget.
Its absence in the early list of LEGO Icons sets from brickmerge.de didn’t necessarily mean that the LEGO Group was skipping a new entry for the veteran line-up in 2024, though – and a fresh listing on the price comparison site suggests it will be coming along after all. Nestled among a longlist of future LEGO gifts-with-purchase is a set currently codenamed 40681 Modular GWP, which is said to be launching in February 2024.
The past couple of LEGO modular buildings have each had a companion gift-with-purchase: 10297 Boutique Hotel was accompanied by 40532 Vintage Taxi, while this year’s 10312 Jazz Club is paired with 40586 Moving Truck. Both of those freebies dropped several weeks after the release of their respective modular buildings, offering an incentive for fans not convinced to buy on day one.
40681 will presumably be hooked to 2024’s modular building in the same way, given the timing of its release in February, and therefore all but confirms we’re still getting a new addition to the series next year. There’s still a remote chance that this could just be a standalone gift-with-purchase that is itself modular, but you have to assume brickmerge knows what it’s doing by tagging the set with that codename.
Official confirmation on whatever’s planned next for the Modular Buildings Collection is probably a long way off yet – we usually see the new set in November or December – but this will hopefully appease anyone worried that the LEGO Group might be changing strategy for the subtheme in 2024. If 40681 does indeed materialise as expected, anyway.
