LEGO 5004419 Classic Knights Minifigure Spotlight

Free promos from LEGO Stores with qualifying purchases have run the gamut since their introduction ranging from complete duds to must-have exclusives (I’m looking at you Darth Revan). Three years ago an annual tradition of sorts began in the form of throwback minifigures from classic LEGO themes paired with a small model. Having returned to both Space and Pirate this year it was Castle’s turn, and the LEGO Group nailed it. Put simply this is the best throwback exclusive yet.

Classic Knight-2

The first distinctive trait of 2016’s model is that, unlike its predecessors, 5004419 is a modern remake of an actual classic set. Specifically 6012 Siege Cart from 1986 which I had as a kid. Other than being down one minifigure, it is otherwise a nearly perfect recreation with some upgraded parts.

For me it was sheer delight putting this together largely for the comparison of the old set to its much newer brother. Most notably the curved shape of the bow, which was originally captured with several brown plates in a stair step pattern, is now sleek and smooth thanks to a brown sloped component.

So many hallmarks of Classic Castle sets can be found in 5004419. The old medieval wheels, the multitude of weapons included (LEGO used to be a lot more generous!), the emblem on the shield and chest piece. Many of us harbour fond memories of saving up pocket money for the absolute plethora of small sets like this which used to exist.

Classic Knight-4

LEGO is fully aware that they are tapping into my nostalgia. In keeping with the established pattern, the back of the instructions manual is laid out as a timeline showcasing the holy grails of Castle sets throughout the years.

Classic Knight-5

LEGO really hit this one out of the park; full marks. Kids will enjoy playing with it and adults of a certain vintage will be transported back to their own childhoods by this gorgeous little set.

The LEGO 5004419 Classic Knights Minifigure is currently available at shop.LEGO.com, free with purchases of £25.00 or more.
