LEGO Fortnite gameplay details and release date rumoured

The upcoming LEGO Fortnite collaboration is rumoured to be launching as early as next month, with the latest reports suggesting gameplay will take cues from LEGO Worlds.

Word of a ‘LEGO island’ within Fortnite first surfaced in January, under the codename ‘Juno’. That term then popped up again in a press release from developer Epic Games in September, linked to the upcoming Chapter 5, renewing suspicions that a LEGO x Fortnite crossover is right around the corner. Reliable sources of Fortnite rumours have now started to tease initial details of the collaboration – including what to expect from its gameplay.

Krowe_moh, for example, has tweeted that the LEGO event will include a ‘worlds system’ with random terrain generation. Players will apparently be able to create their own worlds, as well as viewing and joining other players’ worlds. The collaboration is also thought to include adventures, progression, an overworld, guided building, combat levels, mood reactions, background music and llama non-playable characters.

The same user has teased the possibility of ‘custom LEGO characters’, noting that it’s only a theory – but the chances of it happening are ‘very high’. Given customisation is arguably the bread and butter of any good LEGO video game (nobody tell The Skywalker Saga), that feels like a safe bet. Elsewhere, ShiinaBR has suggested that the collaboration will be a completely different game mode from Fortnite’s standard battle royale.

According to the r/legogaming subreddit, the LEGO x Fortnite crossover will launch during the first season of Fortnite Chapter 5, which kicks off in December. These are all just rumours at this point – the LEGO Group and Epic Games have yet to confirm anything concrete from their $1 billion partnership – but we could be playing around with LEGO characters inside Fortnite within a matter of weeks.

Procedural generation of brick-built worlds wouldn’t be completely alien to veteran LEGO video game fans, as TT Games tried something similar with LEGO Worlds back in 2017. An early attempt to break out of the mould of its regular LEGO video game formula, LEGO Worlds offered players a virtual sandbox to collect bricks and build freely – but it arrived to mixed reviews, and received minimal post-release content from the studio.

If these rumours pan out as anticipated, the LEGO Fortnite collaboration could harness the power of Epic Games’ engine and the popularity of Fortnite to go above and beyond LEGO Worlds. We’ll hopefully find out one way or the other very soon. For now, check out the first LEGO Fortnite model, which appears to recreate the game’s Loot Llama as a promotional build.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
