70908 The Scuttler LEGO Set

As one of the sets most prominently featured in The LEGO Batman Movie, how does the LEGO design team's contribution to the bat-universe measure up? Price: £84.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 (DE)  Pieces: 775 Available: Now Being a big fan of any LEGO mech, this set really caught my eye and I couldn't wait to build and review it. The Scuttler is one of the most prominent vehicles featured in the film, but I won't go into great detail about how it factors into the pot for those who are yet to see it. This set contains a great selection of minifigures, some of which are unique to this set and feature elements not seen before. These include Dick Grayson's bow-tie and Barbara Gordon's GCPD body armour. The stand-out torso is Grayson's rather fetching blue tuxedo sprinkled with silver spangles. Poison Ivy is gorgeous, her torso print is highly detailed and she sports a nice wrap around skirt. The Joker is almost identical to 70900 The Joker Balloon Escape, a much cheaper way to get the movie's main villain. The build itself is split into seven stages, with a single numbered bag of elements for each stage. You begin with Batman's jetpack, then move onto the Scuttler build itself. I was a little confused at first as I thought I was building the cockpit, but it was in fact it was the engine housing. This seemed rather large but is also a storage area for the jetpack when not being used by Batman. The one problem I had with this part of the build was trying to attach the clear cover sticker correctly the first time around, it took a couple of attempts which affected the sticker. Once the engine area and main body are completed it's time to open bags three to six to make a start on those legs. These are fully articulated and can be extended and retracted to add extra posability to the build, the feet are also able to rotate adding more stability. This is the most interesting part of the Scuttler build – having not really used many Technic parts in builds of my own, it was fascinating to see how they were used and it has given me a few ideas for the future. The last stage is the cockpit area, which when the two 4 x 2 Black wedges are added give it a bat head effect. This is added to the main body using a Technic pin and socket rotation joint so it has a good range of motion. Not only is this a satisfying build as each stage is added to the model, but the finished design is unique – in the LEGO Batman range, in The LEGO Batman Movie and in the LEGO range altogether. Not only that, but there's a great mix of minifigures included. As a mech and a vehicle this is something that will be remembered as a one-off, or at least a first, in mixing design and playability in a uniquely satisfying way. 70908 The Scuttler is available now from shop.LEGO.com.
