LEGO Star Wars 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama is all about scale

Recreating the scope of the original movie set with LEGO Star Wars 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama was a lesson in scale.

The LEGO Group last week revealed that two new Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary sets would be arriving on May 1, with pre-orders open from April 7. 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama and 75353 Endor Speeder Bike Diorama will both launch on that date, offering fans the chance to recreate classic scenes from Episode VI and pick up a handful of exclusive minifigures too.

In an interview with the official Star Wars website, the design team behind the sets has been talking about how translating the massive scale of the Emperor’s Throne Room into a LEGO diorama model was achieved and the challenges they faced in doing so.

“When I think about the throne room on the Death Star II, the visual feature that stands out the most to me is the massive circular window that frames the Emperor’s throne,” said designer Jackson Hughes. “When designing the LEGO diorama, we knew from the start that the window would be the most important built feature and that it needed to be huge. It’s so iconic and immediately invokes the scale and mood of the scene. From there, the stairs, control consoles, and lower platform are all in the vicinity and have memorable moments in the film, so we felt it was important to include those. They add balance to the model and allow a builder to recreate many moments from the film.”

Hughes went on to discuss how creating the set also allowed the LEGO Star Wars team to appreciate the scope of the original shooting set. “The first time the throne room is shown in the film, there is a clear sense of direction,” he says. “Luke has one choice. Forward and up. Toward the throne, toward the Emperor. The circular design of the window adds to this. Circles are very static shapes — the only direction of movement is toward the center. Luke is trapped and the original movie set really makes you feel it. It’s awesome!”
