The next Marvel Daredevil TV show is going to be a little different

Charlie Cox – who plays Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – has suggested that the next Daredevil TV show won’t be as mature as its predecessor.

Back in the pre-Disney+ days, one of the biggest Marvel streaming successes was Daredevil – a gritty, action-packed show set in the MCU continuity. Originally appearing on Netflix, the show offered a more mature take on its heroes (it currently carries an 18 age rating on its new Disney+ home) which meant younger fans were out of luck for a little while.

Charlie Cox’s take on Daredevil has gravitated to other MCU content – such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk – with some of his rougher edges shaved down. That seems set to continue, as Cox has recently discussed Daredevil: Born Again, his upcoming Disney+ TV show. However, his comments to NME suggest it will be courting a broader audience than before.

“My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience”, Cox said. “My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.”

When asked about people hoping for a continuation of the Netflix version, Cox said “I would say to those people, we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?”

That might be disappointing to the hardcore Marvel fan, although for LEGO fans it could offer an unexpected advantage. The LEGO Marvel theme is certainly popular, but it’s also been a little selective about the MCU media it chooses to recreate. Concerns about mature content may have prevented the likes of Moon Knight from receiving any official tie-ins, for example.

That hasn’t prevented the likes of Daredevil and the Punisher from appearing in LEGO form before now; each character popped up in 76178 Daily Bugle, for instance. But that set was clearly geared towards the older LEGO fan. A Daredevil without the excessive violence could encourage an appearance of the character in a wider range of LEGO Marvel sets going forward.

An upcoming 2023 Marvel set – 76244 Miles Morales vs. Morbius – is evidence of that idea. The character of Morbius famously appeared in his own movie earlier this year; while this new set isn’t a direct tie-in to that movie, it may be intended to capitalise on the movie’s cultural presence. Nothing has been announced by the LEGO Group with regards to Daredevil, but we’re hoping he appears more widely in LEGO sets going forward – and now, there’s a better reason for him to do so.

Daredevil: Born Again will appear on Disney+ in 2024, with 18 episodes to look forward to. If you’re interested in Marvel content a little sooner than that, make sure to check out our rundown of LEGO Marvel 2023 sets.
