Fan builds LEGO submarines that move underwater
Building a LEGO submarine is one thing, but building one that can genuinely traverse the underwater world is quite another – as this footage demonstrates.
A LEGO fan was inspired by the Aquanauts sets modified to operate underwater to build a pair of brick built submarines that can move when submerged.
“I should make my own LEGO subs with some specific twists,” said Bobby Renz, freshly inspired by a maker fair in California. He built two submarines using LEGO bricks and a few other necessary components to make them move underwater, then ran them in a swimming pool, with a controller to direct their movements.
One of the challenges in the project was being able to control the submarines underwater, needing a low 70ghz frequency in order to be able to make the subs move when submerged. Not only did he overcome that issue though, but he also managed to incorporate launching rockets into one of the subs.
The video description contains information about the various components used to get the subs moving, for any builders looking to undertake a project like this.
