LEGO is one of the UK’s top 10 best-selling video game franchises
New data published by charts company GfK has revealed that LEGO is the fifth-highest-grossing gaming franchise in UK history, eking ahead of Star Wars in physical sales.
To celebrate the imminent launch of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, charts company GfK has published lists of the biggest Star Wars game launches, the best-selling Star Wars games, and the highest-grossing games franchises in the UK. The data is all based on boxed sales, so excludes digital copies – and the results are actually pretty surprising.
FIFA and Call of Duty top the list of the biggest gaming franchises in UK history, which isn’t what you’d call a shock. They’re followed by Grand Theft Auto and Mario – but coming in at fifth place is LEGO, beating Pokémon, The Sims and Star Wars. The LEGO Star Wars games are apparently counted twice, across both LEGO and Star Wars, but even still LEGO sits £14m ahead of Star Wars in physical games revenue.
Highest-grossing game franchises (UK)
Position | Franchise | Total physical revenue | Title count (since 1995) |
---|---|---|---|
1 | FIFA | £1.96bn | 51 |
2 | Call of Duty | £1.53bn | 33 |
3 | Mario | £1.07bn | 101 |
4 | Grand Theft Auto | £769m | 23 |
5 | LEGO | £506m | 80 |
6 | Star Wars | £492m | 107 |
7 | Pokémon | £486m | 96 |
8 | The Sims | £438m | 108 |
9 | Assassin’s Creed | £409m | 29 |
10 | Need for Speed | £378m | 31 |
That’s also with 27 fewer titles to its name, as GfK says there have been a total of 80 different LEGO games since 1995 (compared to Star Wars’ 107). The cross-pollination between franchises has clearly been a benefit to both, however, as two more lists – the biggest Star Wars launches and the best-selling Star Wars titles – each count multiple LEGO Star Wars games among them.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is currently the fourth-biggest Star Wars video game launch in the UK, while LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens and LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars sit in seventh and eighth place respectively. EA’s 2015 reboot of Star Wars: Battlefront takes top spot, while Jedi: Fallen Order comes in at sixth place.

Four different LEGO titles are among the best-selling Star Wars games of all time in the UK, meanwhile – three of which are in the top five. Battlefront is again top dog, but it’s followed by LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. The original LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game sits in fifth place, while LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars rounds out the list in 10th position.

- I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
