Larger LEGO Modular Buildings are not gone forever, confirms LEGO Designer

LEGO Icons 10312 Jazz Club is another Modular Building with two structures on one set, but larger options are not off the table for good.

The newly-revealed LEGO Icons set features two buildings on its 32-stud base plate, a jazz club and a pizzeria. While every Modular Building is built on the same size base plate, the buildings they depict vary in height and width.

In an interview with Brickset, LEGO Designer Anderson Grubb explained that such design decisions are made ‘mainly so that it helps create that feeling of building a city street within a smaller space’.

“We know people still like bigger buildings that occupy the entire width; they’ve not gone or been forgotten,” Grubb told Brickset. “But we really have to find the right reason for them, we have to make sure we use the real estate as effectively as possible.

“If we tried to make this one huge building, I don’t know if it would necessarily have been a jazz club. It probably would have become something more than that.”

As seen in the picture above, having a variety of widths and heights from buildings certainly does make for a more dynamic and realistic street. It also offers the opportunity to include more buildings in one set, with 10312 Jazz Club featuring an easy flow between the club and the eatery next door.

LEGO Icons 10312 Jazz Club is set to be released on LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores on January 1, 2023 and will be priced at £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99.
